Lettre de Mme Nancy BROWN, de l'American Heart Association

"Dear Members,

I am deeply saddened to share that longtime AHA volunteer leader and Golden Heart Professional Member Alan T. Hirsch, MD, FAHA, passed away last weekend. A pioneer in the field of vascular medicine, Alan made critical contributions to improve the understanding of vascular biology and to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for vascular disease. Beyond his many accomplishments as a scientist, he was admired as a caring, passionate advocate and champion of all patients who faced vascular disease.

After graduating from Harvard University in 1976 with magna cum laude honors, Alan earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco, and completed fellowships at Beth Israel Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. At the University of Minnesota, he was a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Vascular Medicine Program at the university's Lillehei Heart Institute. The author of over 200 original peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, Alan's research focused on the relative benefit, risk, and health economic impact of lifestyle, pharmacologic, endovascular, and cell therapy treatments for vascular diseases.

In his esteemed career, he was honored with numerous awards and recognitions including the American College of Chest Physicians Fellowship Award, the Charles River Foundation Animal Research Award, the University of Minnesota Family Practice Teaching Recognition Award, and Best Doctors in America. He was a founding member and past President of the Society for Vascular Medicine, and also a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology.

For nearly 30 years, Alan was a dedicated member of the AHA's Council on Peripheral Vascular Disease, Council on Clinical Cardiology, Council on Epidemiology and Prevention, and Council on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research. He was a past Chairperson of the Council on Peripheral Vascular Disease's Program Committee, Fellow-in-Training & Early Career Committee, and Membership & Communications Committee. In everything he did on our behalf, the well-being of the patient was his primary focus.

We are grateful to Alan for his infectious enthusiasm in advancing the AHA mission and for his unwavering commitment to improving and saving lives. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow (April 19) at 10:30 a.m. at Shalom Memorial Park, Arlington Heights, Illinois. Please visit this link for his obituary and to share condolences.

Sincerely,

Nancy Brown
Chief Executive Officer
